Arts North West Covid-19 Update

Hello all,

I’m sure you are all being inundated with information about Covid-19 (Coronavirus) and its impact on our sector.

It has been a particularly difficult time – from drought to bushfire and now to a global pandemic. All of these have had a huge effect on our creative industries.

Event Cancellation
While the current requirement is to cancel all events that have an audience of 500 and above, many of our venues and organisations may not reach that audience figure but are still understandably anxious. Resourcing and growing community anxiety will also affect ticket sales and we recognise that organisations and individuals will need to take this into consideration in their planning.

If you are in a position to not require a refund for an event, festival, workshop or class that may be cancelled or postponed due to Covid-19 then please consider the ticket you purchased as a donation to the artist, organisation or community. Check out this article from Cut Common Magazine

Advocacy
Regional Arts Australia has also been working with national organisations and Ministers to facilitate a coordinated impact assessment and industry response. A number of surveys have been developed so that a clear picture can be formed as to the impact of Covid-19 on our sector. Please help the advocacy work by filling these out – PAC Australia survey or the National Association of Visual Artists survey. You are also able to submit information to the #Ilostmygig database.

Health and Wellbeing
We are not in a position to provide health advice.  Common sense reminds us to wash our hands, cough into elbows and stay at home if we are unwell.  Please be guided by the following sites that are updated daily:

Australian Government Department of Health

NSW Department of Health

Having said that, hand washing is obviously a crucial requirement.  But… really… handwashing to “Happy Birthday” twice, seems a little prosaic.  Send in your best version of a funky tune/song/poem/ and we will put it up on our social media… let’s keep our creative juices flowing!  (Have a look at TwoSetViolin’s ideas!) Email to media@artsnw.com.au

We are also very aware of the wellbeing of our communities.  With events cancelled, and social distancing in place, we hope that we can still look after each other as best we can. An arts-focused wellbeing helpline is available at Support Act

Pocket Productions brings Bloodwood Quartet to the Region this April

Pocket Productions was launched last year as an Arts North West initiative to deliver high quality productions to smaller communities and villages in the New England North West. This April, the network will welcome a series of concerts by the wonderful Bloodwood Quartet.

The Bloodwood Quartet was formed in 2006 at Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has toured extensively in Australia and abroad as cultural ambassadors for Sydney University.

Bloodwood developed a close relationship with Bloodwood Winery in Orange, NSW and have been collaborating with the Winery for their food and wine festivals regularly since 2006.  Laura Curotta (viola) and Robert Jackson (cello) remain from the original quartet formation and now reside in Armidale.  They are on faculty at the New England Conservatorium of Music and perform throughout New England and the North West.  They are joined on violin by Daniel Lopez and Jason Tong, both sought after Brisbane-based musicians.  Eleanor Streatfeild, cellist, formerly of Armidale, will be appearing as a guest artist on this tour to complete the quintet formation for works by Boccherini and Schubert.

Fall of The Roman Umpire Charms Local Communities

Arts North West’s new initiative POCKET PRODUCTIONS launched in the New England North West in March and was a huge success!

Small communities in Emerald Hill, Walcha, Breeza, Warialda, Barraba, Bundarra, Deepwater and Ben Lomond were delighted to host the one man show The Fall of the Roman Umpire, directed & performed by Dennis Coard.

This autobiographical show was charming, cheeky, fascinating and very very funny.

For many of these New England North West communities, it is the first time theatre has been performed in their wonderful halls.  True country hospitality was on show with organisers offering suppers, nibbles and drinks making the event a great night out.

These beautiful halls are at the heart of their communities, and provide a much needed place for people to get together.  In some cases, it is not the first time that Arts North West has visited with an arts project – in 2016 Breeza, Bundarra, Deepwater and Ben Lomond played host to the eco-dyeing textile workshops Creativitea.

The overwhelming feedback from the communities is “what’s next?!  We want more!”   Pocket Productions aims to offer affordable and professional theatre and musical productions to suit smaller community venues  based on the successful Arts North West ON TOUR model to established performing arts venues across the region.

Arts North West ON TOUR is excited to launch Pocket Productions

This is a new initiative by Arts North West to offer small communities in our region a
networked approach to find and fit hand-selected affordable theatre or musical
productions to tour to the smaller regional venues without a dedicated performing arts
venue. These productions will fit into venues like a community or school hall, school of art
building or an undercover showground area. Pocket Productions would be based on the
successful Arts North West ON TOUR model.
Arts North West ON TOUR now in its fifth year is an established network of community,
LGA, and privately managed venues/presenters (between 8-10 in the New England North
West region). Each network member pays an annual service fee for specialised tour
management. This includes the negotiation of a minimum of 2 negotiated professional
performing arts tours per year; itinerary programming; administration; marketing and
audience development, and the coordination of regional network meetings. More
information can be found at http://www.artsnw.com.au/anw-on-tour
Projects Officer, Nicci Parry-Jones explains, “We have been getting such good feedback
about audience satisfaction from the high quality performing arts touring our regional
theatres got us thinking that it would be wonderful if the smaller and sometimes more
remote communities had the same opportunity.”
For a nominal annual fee, the Pocket Productions package will include: sourcing and
managing the tour itinerary of one suitable touring production, assistance to each venue
to ensure the production is well promoted, liaison between the production company and
venue staff, advice on presentation, ticketing and promotion.
