Looking Both Ways

The "Looking Both Ways" project, held at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), was a collaborative exploration of the interplay between text and image, led by artist Angus Nivison and writer Sophie Masson. This initiative paired artists and writers from the New England North West region for skill-sharing roundtables. Participants created new collaborative works, which were shared and discussed within the group.

The project had positive outcomes, including the creation of innovative works that bridged visual and literary arts, fostering a deeper understanding of the interplay between mediums. It also strengthened artistic connections within the region and encouraged storytelling that resonated with local histories and landscapes. For instance, one participant created works inspired by family histories tied to the Pilliga region, highlighting the project’s role in connecting personal narratives with broader artistic expressions. The collaboration between Nivison and Masson extended to an exhibition at NERAM, also titled Looking Both Ways. This exhibition featured their mutual inspiration, with Masson’s writings complementing Nivison’s artworks and vice versa. These pieces provided audiences with an immersive experience, blending poetry and visual art.

The project exemplified the enriching power of interdisciplinary collaboration, leaving a lasting impact on participants and audiences alike, while also enhancing the cultural vibrancy of the New England region.
