Bawi-li’ Tour

(Bawi-li is the Gamilaraay word for sing)

Arts North West were proud to announce that Loren Ryan and Quarralia Knox hit the road for the ‘Bawi-li’ tour, debuting fresh and modernistic original music. Their trek took place in the New England North West, and small First Nations communities topped the list.

Loren Ryan, a First Nations Australian from the Gamilaraay people of North West New South Wales, was renowned for combining her love of music and language, showcasing both in a creatively captivating way. She wrote original songs and translated well-known Australian songs into her “Ngamba Dhalaay” mother’s tongue.

“I was enthusiastic to play these small communities within our region because of the genuine human connection you get playing intimate gigs like this. Places like Toomelah and Walhollow, where the residents would have to travel to see a concert like this, so I was thrilled to bring the show basically to their doorstep.”
— Loren Ryan

With a voice that drizzled emotion with every performance, Loren’s sound was best described as a mixture of soul and R&B, resonating over a modern acoustic grassroots vibe.

Quarralia Knox, a third-generation singer-songwriter from Tamworth, NSW, and a proud Gomeroi woman, had music as an integral part of her life. She had developed her own sound in harmony with the various styles surrounding her growing up, including Blues, Rock, R&B, and Rap.

“To release my own music for the first time was one of the most exhilarating things I think I could ever do. I had been writing up a storm, enjoying the journey of finding myself through music, and I was ready to share it with my fellow music devotees.”
— Quarralia Knox

Audiences were in for a delicious blend of genres when they listened to Quarralia’s original music.

This was an Arts North West and 2 Rivers initiative made possible by Arts Restart funding through the NSW Government. Their original songs became available on digital platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and all good online music stores from the 26th of March 2021.
