Arts North West Regional Arts Board appoints new President

Kent Mayo, founding member of McCrossins Mill Museum at Uralla, has been elected unopposed to the position of President of Arts North West Regional Arts Board at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting held in Bingara on Friday 23 November.

Mr Mayo is looking forward to this new challenge and the opportunity to work with a very vibrant and positive team. The Board is made up of representatives from across many art forms and from across the region – all with much to offer.

Past President, Meg Larkin, chose not to stand again after completing her third year as President.  Prior to that she held the position of Vice-President for seven years.

John Wearne has also stepped down from his position as Vice President on the Board.  He was the Board’s inaugural President, and held that position for seven years.  He has been Vice President for the past three years.

Both have made an extraordinary contribution to the organisation to the great benefit of the region’s arts and cultural development.  They have also played a leading role in connecting the organisation and the region to arts bodies at a state and national level.

The Regional Arts Board also welcomed a new member, Sandy McNaughton, Manager of Bingara’s Roxy Theatre, who brings a wide range of expertise to her appointment.

A feature of this year’s Annual General Meeting was a forum entitled ‘Venues, Touring, Programming (what works, what doesn’t)’.  John Wearne chaired the forum, which included presentations by guest speaker, Belinda Giblin, and representatives from three New England North West venues - Robin Riley (Tenterfield School of Arts), Susan Wilson (Civic Theatre, Gunnedah), and Sandy McNaughton (Roxy Bingara).  Representatives from various communities in the region, including Liverpool Plains Shire Council and community members from Quirindi who are exploring the possibility of establishing a multi-arts arts venue in Quirindi, met the presentations with a great response.

The remaining Arts North West Regional Arts Board executive positions will be confirmed at its next meeting.

For details please contact Arts North West on 02 6732 4988.

Inverell Art as an Industry Forum a huge success

The many artists and art industry representatives who participated have declared the Art as an Industry Forum held in Inverell on 18 November a huge success.

Arts North West Regional Arts Board, Northern Inland Regional Development Board and the Inverell Art Society developed the Forum with support from the Department of State and Regional Development, Inverell Shire Council and the New England Institute of TAFE.

The Inverell Forum follows the success of earlier forums held in Armidale, Tamworth and Moree – all of which have received a great response from participants and provided valuable knowledge, skills and resources for artists to develop their networks.  They have also suggested excellent strategies for the further development of the region’s art industry.

Visual arts surveys profiling the industry across the New England North West have been undertaken at the completion of each of the forums.

The next forum will be held in Quirindi in 2008.  Survey results from each forum will then be colllated.

Partners in the project are Arts North West, the Northern Inland Regional Development Board, the New England Institute of TAFE, the NSW Department of State and Regional Development, Inverell Art Society and the Inverell Shire Council.  The Forum has received financial support from the NSW Department of State and Regional Development, Inverell Shire Council and the New England Institute of TAFE.

Uralla community rallies to save foundry
Action is being taken by concerned residents of Uralla who called a public meeting to form a new association to raise funds to acquire and restore the town's old Phoenix foundry. Originally an iron lace manufacturer's, the foundry made cogs and bearings during WWI and was transformed into a car showroom until the Great Depression when the owners took to milling timber. In 1937 the foundry was casting iron pipes for the town's first water works. In 1982 it was bronze memorial plaques. Now the iconic building faces extinction.
