  • Beyond the Concept: Manufacturing Your Designs
    2 September, Sydney

You’ve had the idea, you’ve developed the concept, now find out how you can turn your design into a real product. If you’ve ever wondered what’s involved with transforming an idea into a commercial product, with the potential to sell not only in Australia but worldwide, you shouldn't miss this event.  Beyond the Concept is a panel discussion for Aboriginal designers who want to turn their design ideas into reality. Today, many designers, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, are inspired by Australian Indigenous art, often combining traditional methods with contemporary design. This combination produces a strong, distinctively Australian look, which has huge commercial potential, not only domestically, but overseas. This event is open to anyone wishing to attend but it would be fantastic to have as many Aboriginal creative designers attend as possible. • Creative Journal Workshop — KARLA MUIR
    4 September, 10am to 4pm @ NEWC, Armidale

This is a writers' workshop with a difference. Karla explains: Usually, the main purpose of writing is the product — here, it is the process which is at the centre of our attention. You can certainly use the techniques specifically to further your writing career, but the applications are potentially much broader than that. You can employ them for: problem solving, to get in touch with your intuition, to strengthen your creativity, to get a healthier perspective on old issues, and in general, to get a more positive outlook on life. They can also help to uncover layers of your subconscious mind. I have chosen 6 processes that were particularly helpful to participants of previous workshops. In nearly 40 years of journalling, I have learnt, adapted and developed the techniques I'm going to share with you. Self-help books, my studies of linguistics and psychology and my NLP training have provided many ideas and inspirations. Journalling is a great tool, and anyone can do it – you don't need any literary talents for it.  COST: $50 members / $60 non-members Please contact NEWC tel. • 'racing the Surface' - works by Samantha Reading and Sasha Jury-Radford
10 September - 9 October @ Andrea Bruno Art Studio, Tamworth

all day and encouraging the creativity of secondary students, Samantha Reading and Sasha Jury-Radford in a moment of madness decided to do their own thing and have an exhibition. Little did they realize what a massive undertaking this would be or how much physical and psychological energy this would entail. Working hard after school, juggling the demands of school and family proved enormously difficult. However, with both artists opening their mind and spirit to their own creativity it has been refreshing after spending so much time eliciting responses from students. Samantha has tediously puzzled together fragments of memory and experience in referencing the landscape through an intensely personal exploration of the media. In contrast Sasha has incorporated texture and bold colour with a strong trace of a floral theme on canvas, shards of clay and intricate vessels. Together there is a visual progression both conceptually and technically. For both Samantha and Sasha working towards this exhibition has been a positive aspect of 2010 and hopefully lays a path towards future creative endeavors. Open 12 - 2pm Wednesdays to Saturdays.  For information call 02 6766 3553 or go to www.andreabrunoartstudio.com
